FDA Commissioner Andrew Von Eschenbach, MD, to Speak at February 29 National Press Club Luncheon

Posted on: Thursday, 21 February 2008, 15:01 CST

WASHINGTON, Feb. 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Andrew von Eschenbach, MD, Commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration, will take center stage at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 29 with a major address at the National Press Club. The topic of his speech will be "Peril and Promise: FDA at a Turning Point."

The FDA is charged with protecting the safety of food products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices; these products account for 20% of consumer spending and an even greater percentage of consumers' product safety fears. Dr. von Eschenbach's NPC appearance follows what some have termed a surprise proposal in the administration's fiscal year 2009 budget for FDA authority to approve generic versions of biologic medicines, man-made versions of human proteins.

A leading authority on cancer, Dr. von Eschenbach formerly served as head of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and the National Cancer Institute -- and is himself a former melanoma and prostate cancer patient.

The National Press Club luncheon will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m., and Dr. von Eschenbach's remarks begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by a question and answer session. To make reservations, please call (202) 662-7501, or email pnelson@press.org. Cost of the luncheon is $16 for National Press Club members, $28 for guests of members, $35 general admission.

The National Press Club is located at 14th and F. Streets, NW, one block west of Metro Center. More information about the Club and its programs is found on its website, http://www.press.org/.
