Goliad Fitness Walk is Saturday
By Sruthi Kunnel, Victoria Advocate, Texas
Feb. 22–To encourage people who made new year’s resolutions to stay fit, Amigos of Goliad State Park is hosting a fitness walk on Saturday.
The walk will be along the 4.5-mile hike and bike trail that begins downtown and goes through the Goliad State Park.
Mary Ashton, chairperson of the Amigos of Goliad State Park, talks about the event.
Q: Tell me a little bit about the event.
A: We started this last year and we wanted to bring people’s attention to the park and the hike and bike trail which goes through the park.
It’s a beautiful hike and bike trail and we want to encourage people to hike and bike for health reasons and to enjoy the park.
It’s a great family activity to take that walk and we want to do a little fundraiser at the same time, make a little bit of money for the park too.
I am with the Amigos of Goliad State Park.
We are a support organization for the park. So this is like a little fundraiser and this is just the second year that we are doing this.
Q: What will the money be used for?
A: It will be for programs that the park wants to do. It can be for some of the educational programs that they do at the park or it could be used for light restoration of some of the building at the park. Though usually we try to put it toward educational programs at the park.
Q: Where does the walk start?
A: It is going to start at the Goliad Community Center and that’s where the hike and bike trail starts in Goliad.
What we’ll do is we will serve all the participants lunch when they get back. There will be a stew and chili lunch.
Q: How many people are you expecting at the event?
A: We would like to increase it over last year.
Last year we only had about 30.
We wanted to do this earlier in the year because we thought it would get in on people’s new year resolutions. So that was one of the reasons we are hoping we’ll get an increase over last year’s participants.
Q: How much is it to participate?
A: We’ve got registration set at $10 per person, and children, 11 and under, are free.
And there are registration forms available at the park, at the chamber or at the chamber Web site http://www.goliadcc.org/events/bodyandsoulstroll.html.
We’ll start the walk at 10 a.m. Saturday. And early registration will be at 9:30 a.m. at the community center.
We would really like people to register but if people just want to come they can.
I think the weather is really going to be nice that day. I was looking at the weather forecast and it is going to be a nice, sunny day.
So we might have some people that come because it’s a nice day.
Q: Anything else that you want to add?
A: Everyone does get a small gift for participating.
