322 Breast Cancer Patients Whose Tests Were Redone Have Died, N.L. Gov't Says

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - The Newfoundland and Labrador government says more than 300 patients who had questionable breast cancer tests redone have died, almost twice the number originally thought.

Last May, it was revealed through a court affidavit by a health board official that 176 breast cancer patients who had their hormone receptor tests redone have died.

But provincial health officials said today revised figures show 322 people whose hormone receptor tests were redone have died.

The information comes days before a judicial inquiry into the botched breast cancer tests under the Eastern Health authority's jurisdiction is expected to begin.

It's not known how many of the 322 patients received wrong results from their tests.

But at least 36 of the patients who were given inaccurate results have since died, though it remains unknown how many died of their cancer and whether a different treatment could have helped them.
