HealthAmerica and HealthAssurance Present Community Weight Loss Challenge

Posted on: Thursday, 10 February 2005, 15:00 CST

ERIE, Pa., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- HealthAmerica and HealthAssurance are presenting Lighten-Up! Erie, a team-based weight loss program that provides tools for making healthy lifestyle changes. It will begin on February 21, 2005, and run for ten consecutive Monday evenings from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the Family First Sports Park. Robert L. Dawson, president and CEO of HealthAmerica and HealthAssurance, is highly supportive of the program. "We wanted to demonstrate our commitment to the Erie community by promoting the importance of making healthy life choices. Lighten-Up! Erie is not a fad diet; it is a program that focuses on practical, effective tools and nutritional strategies to help participants reach their weight loss goals and make long-term changes to their lifestyles."

This program takes a "whole person" approach to weight loss by helping participants gain personal insight into their physical, emotional, and spiritual selves. After taking a Wellness Inventory, each participant creates a Personal Wellness Plan consisting of a series of action items, thus breaking down the weight loss process into manageable steps instead of a single big undertaking.

Lighten-Up! Erie is built around a community- and team-based concept. Everyone in the Erie community -- including for-profit and non-profit organizations, large and small businesses, health care organizations, churches, colleges, neighborhoods and family members -- is encouraged to join. All participants form teams, so they can rely on fellow team members for mutual support and motivation.

At each 90-minute Lighten-Up! Erie session, the teams learn a different method for achieving long-term weight loss success. Some examples of topics presented are:

- Breaking the carbohydrate addiction cycle

- Making realistic and practical healthy lifestyle changes for the

long-term

- Staying motivated between sessions

- How small changes can have big weight loss payoffs

- Using yoga and the mind-body connection to sculpt your body and build

strength

At the end of the program, the team that loses the most weight based on average percentage will receive $500. But more importantly, participants receive vital resources to help improve their health for a lifetime. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( http://www.cdc.gov/ ), people who are overweight or obese are more likely to suffer from serious medical conditions such as heart disease and stroke; high blood pressure; diabetes; cancer; gallbladder disease and gallstones; osteoarthritis; gout; breathing problems, such as sleep apnea; and asthma. Lighten-Up! Erie provides the know-how to lose weight, which can result in significant health benefits.
