Toxoplasmosis and Pregnancy: Clarifying Information Regarding Eggs From The Egg Nutrition Center
Posted on: Friday, 11 February 2005, 12:00 CST
WASHINGTON, Feb. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Recent news reports regarding a new recommendation that all pregnant women be screened for an infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii, also known as toxo, incorrectly suggest that undercooked eggs are a source of this parasite.
"Eggs are not known to contain Toxoplasma gondii and have never been associated with toxoplasmosis," according to Hilary Shallo Thesmar, Ph.D., R.D., director of Food Safety Programs at the Egg Nutrition Center in Washington, D.C.
"It is very important that pregnant women are aware of ways to reduce their risk of developing toxoplasmosis in addition to avoiding other infections such as foodborne illnesses," says Dr. Thesmar. "Pregnant women need to take extra precautions with the food that they eat."
Even though eggs are not associated with toxoplasmosis, as with any animal food product, it is good food safety practice to always cook eggs thoroughly before eating, especially for pregnant women.
