MultiVu Video Feed: New National Colorectal Cancer Screening Guidelines Issued By the American Cancer Society

Posted on: Thursday, 6 March 2008, 12:01 CST

Non-Invasive Dna Screening Option May Save More Lives

New national colorectal cancer (CRC) screening guidelines issued today by the American Cancer Society support DNA screening as an option for detecting colorectal cancer. Currently, there are 89 million Americans over the age of 50 who should be getting regular screening for colorectal cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, less than half of Americans age 50 or older have any colorectal cancer screening at all.

Despite the availability of screening and diagnostic tests for more than 20 years, the rate of early detection remains low and deaths from CRC, the second most deadly cancer, remain high.

The non-invasive DNA technology is based on the understanding of how colorectal cancer develops at a molecular level. Over time, cells in the colon and rectum accumulate genetic abnormalities and mutations. As pre-cancerous lesions (e.g., adenomas) form, they continuously shed cells into the stool. The laboratory isolates the DNA from the stool and looks for DNA that is commonly altered when colorectal cancer is present.

Colorectal cancer is the most deadly cancer among non-smoking men and women in the U.S., and the second most deadly cancer overall. It is estimated that nearly 150,000 new cases will be diagnosed and 50,000 deaths are anticipated in 2008 due to CRC. It is estimated that roughly one-third of CRC-related deaths could be saved if more people underwent regular screening. Early diagnosis results in a greater than 90 percent, five-year survival rate.
