It’s Time to Read Across America at Local Schools
By Jonnelle Davis
Draper Elementary School celebrated Read Across America and Dr. Seuss’ birthday with Miss North Carolina Jessica Jacobs.
Jacobs read Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” to third- graders on Tuesday. Jacobs, who founded the “Read to Me” literacy program in Davidson and Randolph counties, grew up in High Point.
Schools across the county are celebrating the Read Across America campaign with various activities. Communities In Schools of Rockingham County, a dropout prevention program, also gave out free books this week to students at Draper and Moss Street elementary schools.
The book giveaway was made possible through a partnership between Communities In Schools and First Book, which provides new books to children from low-income families. More than 2,200 books worth more than $20,000 were provided to Rockingham schools. Students at Holmes Middle School received books last month.
