Aging Group Starts Its Classes Today

The Chesterfield Partnership for Successful Aging will sponsor classes at the Bensley Community Center, 2900 Drewry’s Bluff Road. Individual classes, taught by various instructors, begin today and will run on Tuesdays each week through April 2. Chester women’s club cancels fashion show

The Woman’s Club of Chester Spring Fashion Show and Luncheon, scheduled for March 15, has been canceled.

Robotics teams will vie at Siegel Center

The FIRST Robotics Competition, NASA/VCU regional, will be Thursday through Saturday at the Siegel Center, 1200 W. Broad St., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sixty-four high school robotics teams from Virginia, North Carolina, Washington, Pennsylvania and Hawaii will compete.

The event is free. Spectators can watch the games from the stands or bring a pair of safety glasses and go to the pits to talk to teams and see their robots.

Literacy council sets training workshops

The Tri-City Literacy Council will sponsor workshops to train volunteers to teach adults to read.

The workshops will be held March 15 and 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.

Those who speak, read and write English and are interested in volunteering can call (804) 862-9262 to register.

Richmond schools slate preschool registration

Richmond public schools will begin citywide registration March 20, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., for 2008-09 preschool programs.

Registration will continue from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Thursday through June 12 at all Richmond elementary schools (except George Mason and Fairfield Court).

Beginning April 1, preschool registration also will be held every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at these community locations:

— East End District Initiative Building, 701 N. 25th St.

— Parent Resource Center, Richmond Technical Center, North Building, Room 205.

— Humphrey Calder Community Center, 414 N. Thompson St.

Starting April 2, preschool registration also will be every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Southside Community Service Center, 4100 Hull St.

Parents must bring proof of residency, their child’s birth certificate, Social Security card, record of a physical exam completed within the past 12 months and an up-to-date immunization record. For children being registered for Head Start, proof of income, health-insurance cards and a copy of dental exams also must be presented.
