Curt Smith Joins Alvarez & Marsal Healthcare Industry Group As a Senior Director

With an increasing number of operational and financial issues straining healthcare organizations across the country, Alvarez & Marsal Healthcare Industry Group, a division of leading global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), announced the expansion of the firm's healthcare presence in Boston with the addition of Curt Smith. Mr. Smith has joined the firm as a senior director.

Mr. Smith brings more than 35 years of executive operating experience working with both large integrated healthcare delivery systems as well as small not-for-profit hospitals. Throughout his career, he has held leadership positions at healthcare facilities in Boston and Detroit, including multiple Harvard Teaching Hospitals, at the forefront of clinical advances and medical research.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Smith served for 15 years as president of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, a Harvard Teaching Hospital. In this role, Mr. Smith initiated a major operating turnaround that reduced a multi-million dollar budget deficit while transforming the hospital from a primarily in-patient model to a diverse set of thriving in-patient and out-patient programs. In addition, he nearly tripled the hospital's endowment to $83 million through strategic philanthropic and investment plans. Previously, Mr. Smith held leadership roles with Boston's New England Deaconess and Brigham and Women's Hospitals as well as Harper Grace Hospitals in Detroit.

Mr. Smith earned a bachelor's degree in history from St. Lawrence University and a master's degree in business administration, concentrating in finance, from Northeastern University. He also received a master's degree in public health, with a focus in health services administration, from Harvard's School of Public Health.
