Diesel Cars Creating More Pollution
A Danish researcher said the government’s push to increase the number of diesel cars on the road has resulted in more pollution.
While diesel fuel is considered more fuel-efficient and climate-friendly, the cars lack filters to keep small, highly polluting particles from being emitted into the air, the Copenhagen Post reported Friday.
The Danish car owner’s group FDM said 47 percent of car sales in Denmark are now small vehicles with diesel motors, compared to 25 percent in 2006.
‘The effects of particle pollution are well-documented, pollution expert Kare Press-Nielsen told the newspaper. Thousands of bronchitis and asthma cases are due to particle pollution.
The newspaper said new European Union regulations require that all diesel cars be equipped with particle filters by September 2009.
