Glen Burnie West: Cantata Celebrates Start of Holy Week

Glen Burnie United Methodist Church will begin its Holy Week celebration with a cantata “Behold! God’s Holy Lamb” at the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services tomorrow.
The church is located at 5 Second Ave. S.E.
The cantata will be presented by the church’s chancel choir. It traces the events of Passion week from Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem to his death on the cross.
The United Methodist Men will host a Communion prayer breakfast at 7 a.m. tomorrow. All men and boys in the church and the community are welcome to attend. A continental breakfast will be served.
Sunday school classes will celebrate Hosanna Day from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. There will be a special worship service for children with music, lessons of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, crafts and snacks. The program will end with an Easter egg hunt. Nursery school age children are welcome to participate if they are accompanied by an adult. Sunday school classes also will be available for adults from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m.
A new contemporary worship service, “Heart of Worship,” will be offered from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. every Sunday.
The church will host a social coffee cafe from 9:30 to 9:45 a.m. and from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. after the 8:30 a.m. worship service and before the 9:45 and 11 a.m. services.

Peace Lutheran Church
Peace Lutheran Church will celebrate Palm Sunday with a Festival Mass with Holy Communion at 8:45 and 11 a.m. tomorrow at the church, 416 Wellham Ave.
Misa, the Mass in Spanish, with Holy Communion will begin at 10 a.m.
A contemporary worship service with Holy Communion will be offered at 6 p.m. today.
The church will sponsor an Easter egg hunt at 10 a.m. tomorrow on the church grounds followed by an Easter neighborhood parade at 10:45 a.m.
A First Holy Communion preparation class will be led by Deacon Gail Wilson at 3 p.m. tomorrow. Advance sign up is required.

The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer will celebrate Palm/Passion Sunday with a procession of palms and the reading of “The Passion According to St. Matthew” at both the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services.

Holy Trinity
Fifth-grade students will re-enact the Passion at the 9 a.m. Family Mass celebrated by Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the auditorium of Monsignor Slade Catholic School, 120 Dorsey Road. Palms also will be blessed.
The Lord’s Passion will be proclaimed at all other Masses this weekend and palms will be blessed. Masses will be celebrated at 5 and 7 p.m. Saturday and at 7, 8:30 and 10 a.m., noon and 6 p.m. in the church, 7436 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd.
Mass also will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Sunday in the Monsignor Slade auditorium.

IEP workshop
The Partners for Success Resource Center will offer a parent workshop, “Individualized Education: An Overview of the Special Education Process,” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Oakwood Elementary School, 330 Oak Manor Drive.
All parents are welcome to attend; however, advance registration is requested.
The workshop will provide a basic understanding for parents of individualized education programs and how they can better participate in the process.

Movie night
Glen Burnie Baptist Church will host a church-wide movie night at 6 p.m. tomorrow. The church is located at 7524 Old Stage Road.
The movie “Flywheel” will be shown. The movie was made by the same people who filmed “Facing the Giants.” It tells the story of a man who will do whatever it takes to succeed, and who learns the effect that has on his relationships with family and friends.

Quarter auction
A quarter auction will be held Monday at the Ferndale Volunteer Fire Company hall, 4 S. Broadview Blvd.
Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Arnold.
Admission is $3.
The doors open at 6:15 p.m. The auction game will begin at 7 p.m.
Door prizes also will be awarded.

Computer class registration is being accepted at the Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road.
Most classes begin the week of April 7. The course fee is $20 per class or $5 per workshop.

Hip and knee replacement
Baltimore Washington Medical Center will offer a free seminar on hip and knee replacement surgery at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Courtney Conference Center, located on the lower level of the Tate Cancer Center, 305 Hospital Drive. Patients thinking about joint replacement surgery are invited to attend. Certified physicians assistants and nurse practitioners will talk about hip and knee replacement surgery, including what patients can expect after the operation and during recovery, and how to prepare for the surgery. Two videos will be shown and there will be a question-and-answer session.

Senior information specialist Wanda Swift will meet with seniors at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Glen Square Senior Nutrition program site, 102 Crain Highway N.W. Mrs. Swift will assist seniors with determining their needs, locating services and completing applications for assistance.

Looking for a special handmade Easter gift? Stop by and visit the craft and consignment shop operated by the Community Advocates for Senior Opportunities and Services Inc. on the first floor of the Anne Arundel Community College in the Glen Burnie Town Center, 101 Crain Highway N.E.
The store is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Craft items sold in the store have been handmade by seniors from throughout the county. Twenty percent of the profits fund an emergencies and crisis intervention fund for seniors.
Consignment items are accepted from seniors from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Food pantry
Oakwood Wesleyan Church, 505 Oakwood Station Road, will open its food pantry from 9 to 11 a.m. today to families in need of food.
Youth members of the church took part in a 30-hour famine last weekend to experience what true hunger feels like. Thirteen teenagers and five adults participated, raising $2,300 toward famine relief.
As a service project during the event, the youth constructed 1,208 wooden crosses which were planted in the church’s front yard during the last hour of the event to symbolize the number of children who would die worldwide during that hour from hunger and malnutrition.

Swim club
Memberships are available for the 2008 summer pool season at the Glen Burnie Park Swim Club. The outdoor community pool is located at 500 Everett Road.
Family memberships are $385 for the first two people and $25 for each additional child ages 2 to 20 years. Children younger than age 2 will be admitted free. In addition, there is a one-time initiation fee of $100 for new members. Associate memberships for one person are offered at a cost of $200 for the season. Monthly memberships are also available.
Members who pay in full prior to March 31 will receive a spring special of a basket of pool-related goodies including free guest passes and concession stand coupons.
The pool is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The swim club facilities feature a four-lane 25-meter swimming pool, barbecue grills, a pavilion, a wading pool, tennis courts, volleyball court and a competition swim team.
Swim lessons also are offered during the summer.
