CALIFORNIA, Pa., March 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Women's Studies Program of California University of Pennsylvania will host the 3rd annual Audrey-Beth Fitch Conference at Morgan Hall on March 27, 2008. Entitled "The Other Side of Beauty: Impact on a Woman's Sense of Self," the conference will feature panel discussions about women's current and past experiences in five fields of study, a keynote speech, an art exhibit, and a poetry slam. All events are free and open to the public. The schedule includes:

Panel Presentations in Morgan Hall + Women in Science (8:00 a.m.) Women and Fashion (9:30 a.m.) Dance and Sports (12:30 p.m.) Race, Gender, and Sexuality (2:00 p.m.) Social Construction of Identity (3:30 p.m.) Keynote Speech (7:00 pm., Morgan Hall Auditorium) Art Exhibit Reception & Poetry Slam (8:30 p.m., Jozart's, 201 Wood Street)

The conference keynote speaker will be Dr. Linda B. Hall, author of Mary, Mother, and Warrior: The Virgin in Spain and the Americas, discussing the ways in which beauty served and failed to serve women in the 1930's and 1940's.

"We will be exploring the contradictions of ideals representing inner beauty and outer beauty in the past and today," says Dr. Marta McClintock-Comeaux, Director of the Women's Studies Program in the Department of Justice, Law and Society. "The conference focuses in part on the construction of feminine beauty. Yet with the panelists representing scholars of diverse disciplines, we are looking forward to the lively discussions that reveal the depth of analysis constantly emerging in an interdisciplinary field such as women's studies.

"The day will inspire participants to reflect about our personal--and collective--sense of self," Dr. McClintock-Comeaux says.

The 3rd Annual Audrey-Beth Fitch Conference, named for the former director of Women's Studies Program, is made possible by California University of Pennsylvania's Office of the President and from a Social Equity Grant awarded by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
