Intermountain Medical Center has appointed Dr. Bruce Reid and Dr. Stephen Clayson as surgical director and associate surgical director, respectively, of its Utah Artificial Heart Program.

Both surgeons specialize in adult cardiothoracic surgery, including heart transplantation and mechanical heart devices. Reid completed his general and cardiothoracic surgical residencies at the University of Utah School of Medicine and began working for Intermountain Healthcare’s LDS Hospital in 2001.

Clayson completed his training at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston, Mass., and at the Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, Ga. He began his career with LDS Hospital in 1991. Both surgeons have been working with the Utah Artificial Heart Program for the past six years.

The Utah Artificial Heart Program at Intermountain Medical Center is one of the leading centers in the U.S. with 14 years of experience in artificial heart technologies. The program offers therapies such as ventricular assist devices (mechanical heart pumps) that restore quality of life to patients suffering from end- stage/advanced heart failure.
