PatientFlow Technology, Inc. (www.patientflowtech.com), a leading provider of patient flow management tools and services for hospitals, today announced that WellStar Health System has begun implementing patient flow changes in Phase I of a hospital-wide patient flow improvement project at Kennestone Hospital, WellStar's 633-bed, flagship hospital located in Marietta, Georgia.
This project is a data driven, science-based effort that combines operations management techniques and queuing approaches specifically adapted for healthcare organizations. Kennestone is implementing the first of three phases, which will improve patient flow, quality and safety at the hospital. The project involves a close collaboration among the medical staff, hospital and system leadership in smoothing scheduled demand, reducing artificial variability and optimally allocating capacity to meet patient needs.
"WellStar Kennestone is committed to achieving our world-class service and safety goals," said Candice Saunders, SVP and Hospital Administrator. "As the demand for our emergency and surgical services continues to grow, we are applying operations management techniques to minimize wait times and to make the most effective use of our capacity. The staff at PatientFlow Technology has been working hand-in-hand with our physicians, nurses and administrators in Phase I of this groundbreaking endeavor."
"When a hospital like Kennestone makes the commitment to modify its thinking and practices through adopting innovative operations management principles, it speaks volumes about the critical nature of this project," said Richard Siegrist, president and CEO of PatientFlow Technology. "The underlying causes of most ER overcrowding are the unavailability of inpatient beds and long wait times for surgery for ER patients. We are using a proven methodology to smooth patient flow and reduce ER overcrowding, while at the same time enhancing patient safety and quality of care."
The vision of WellStar Health System is to deliver world-class healthcare through its hospitals, physicians and services. WellStar Health System includes: Cobb, Douglas, Kennestone, Paulding and Windy Hill Hospitals; WellStar Physicians Group; Urgent Care Centers; Health Place; Homecare; Hospice; Atherton Place; and WellStar Foundation.
