The Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at Presbyterian/St. Luke's is Now Member of the Children's Oncology Group

DENVER, March 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Presbyterian/St. Luke's Hospital and Rocky Mountain Pediatric Hematology-Oncology are pleased to announce that our program is a Member of the Children's Oncology Group (C.O.G.). C.O.G. is supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and is the world's largest cooperative childhood, adolescent and young adult cancer research organization.

Every year in the United States about 9,000 children are diagnosed with cancer. Because childhood cancers and their treatments are different from most adult cancers it is often only through collaborative research and access to clinical trials that new ways to treat children, teens and young adults with cancer are discovered.

The NCI defines a clinical trial as "one of the final stages of a long and careful cancer research process. Studies are done with cancer patients to find out whether promising approaches to cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment are safe and effective."

Patients who participate in clinical trials have access to investigational treatment options and certain agents before they are available to the general public. We are excited to be able to offer our patients these innovative treatment plans in a caring and personalized setting with highly specialized multidisciplinary physicians who support the special needs of children, teens and young adults with cancer.

For 126 years, P/SL has been meeting the healthcare needs of patients and their families from across the Rocky Mountain and Great Plains regions, and from around the world. With over 80 specialties, 1,000 specialists and primary care physicians, and 1,600 employees, P/SL is the only tertiary/quaternary care hospital in a seven state region that offers one campus with leading comprehensive care, featuring Advanced Centers for Minimally Invasive Surgery, Cardiovascular Services, Cancer/BMT, Pediatrics, Maternal-Fetal Care, Orthopedics, Kidney Transplant, HBO, Wound Healing, Infectious Diseases and more. P/SL provides compassionate and innovative care. Licensed for 680 beds, P/SL is the largest hospital in Colorado.
