Depomed Develops Swelling Pills for Even Release of Pharmaceuticals

Posted on: Monday, 28 February 2005, 09:00 CST

Depomed (Menlo Park, CA, USA), pharmaceutical firm, has developed swelling pills for even release of pharmaceuticals. The tablets are as big as aspirin and they swell to the size of a 50-pence coin in the stomach. The swelling is caused by polymers added to the drugs

. The polymers increase their volume in contact with gastric juices. The swollen tablet does not get into the small intestine and remains in the stomach, where many drugs absorb better during 6-8 hours. This delay makes possible slower, more even release of the effective substances during the dissolution of the pill. Depomed's first product is a tablet containing metformin, a drug used in the treatment of diabetes. Approval from the FDA is expected later in 2005. Depomed is also testing pills for the treatment of urinary tract infections, pain attacks, and other problems.
