Apr. 3–Even humorists get sick.

“I’ve got laryngitis,” said author and motivational speaker Suzanne Metzger, who will speak Tuesday at the Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa.

The event will debut a new monthly Healthy Woman program by Northwest Medical Center. It will start with a Women’s Expo and Health Fair — including a fashion show by Dillard’s — from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dinner will feature about an hour-long talk by Metzger.

“I’m a humorist. A humorist has a message — a comedian is just there to entertain,” said Metzger, who lives in the Indianapolis area with her husband. “I like to educate and entertain.

“When you use humor, you can get adults to do amazing things.”

Metzger wrote “Learning Through Living . . . Some Assembly Required” and co-authored “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Living With Breast Cancer.” The cost for the expo, dinner and presentation is $20.

“We’re very, very hard on ourselves,” said Metzger, whose Web site is www.corporate masters.com. “We need to be more gentle with ourselves.

“I have had so many people come up and say things to me (after I speak),” she said. “I tell people how old I am (60), and I tell them what size clothes I wear (16).”

The monthly Healthy Woman presentations will cover physical and emotional health care, financial well-being and spiritual development. Topics will include heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer, menopause, nutrition, osteoporosis and stress management. Membership is free.

The breast cancer survivor found a lump during a breast self-exam about 15 years ago. She’s officially cancer free.

“A lot of people think when they’re over 50 that they’re safe. We are never safe,” Metzger said.
