University of Virginia Department of Medicine Prescribes Business Intelligence From Information Builders for a Healthy Bottom Line

Information Builders, the independent leader in production business intelligence (BI) systems, is pleased to announce that The University of Virginia Department of Medicine recently chose the WebFOCUS BI platform to help streamline clinical and financial reporting across ten divisions.
The Department of Medicine had two accounting systems: one for the Health Services Foundation, the other for the School of Medicine. These disparate systems were making it difficult for accounting pros to create consolidated financial reports and deliver information to a diverse user base, which includes physicians, clinical administrators, and department heads with varying skill levels.
"We needed a reporting environment that was easy to use and could handle the needs of our physicians, as well as our clinical and department administrators," said Elizabeth Wildman, vice chair and chief operating officer for the Department of Medicine. "WebFOCUS provides a platform to bring together data from diverse systems to enable unified data analysis at multiple levels. We now have a single reporting tool to take care of our most acute business needs."
The University of Virginia Department of Medicine successfully implemented Information Builders WebFOCUS, merging financial reports, faculty remuneration plans, and clinical billing reports. More than 150 users now depend on WebFOCUS to bridge the school's two accounting systems and satisfy a diverse set of reporting requirements, including the ability to tightly integrate the new reports with Microsoft Excel. Additionally, WebFOCUS combines Microsoft SQL Server data with information from Oracle Financials, Epicor Financials, and a clinical billing system.
Faculty members use WebFOCUS to track their financials and review administrative information. Because faculty and staff members do not need special software to run WebFOCUS reports, they can easily access them from home or while traveling. They can quickly obtain information on finances, expenditures, and on clinical revenue, drilling down to review specific cases. According to Wildman, WebFOCUS improves the efficiency of employees throughout the organization, with direct savings of more than $150,000 per year. In one instance, a set of reports that took one month to produce with Excel is being created with WebFOCUS in three hours.
"The University of Virginia Department of Medicine has demonstrated how healthcare organizations can improve internal efficiencies to empower both doctors and administrators with the right information, leading them to be fiscally responsible," said Gerald Cohen, CEO and founder, Information Builders. "Business intelligence technology is the remedy for increased efficiency and better understanding that allows the Department of Medicine to analyze business data more thoroughly and make better business decisions."
The Department of Medicine has future plans to build an ad hoc reporting environment that will enable administrators to conduct their own analysis and create libraries of custom reports. The Department of Medicine plans on extending its reporting system with HR, grants management and budget models.
