IntraOp Medical Corporation (OTCBB: IOPM), a provider of innovative technology solutions for the treatment and eradication of cancer, announced today that it has received an order for the Mobetron from the PLA General Hospital in Beijing, China. This purchase marks the second Mobetron to be installed in Beijing, as the Cancer Institute & Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) acquired a Mobetron in Fall 2007. The Mobetron is a mobile electron beam radiation device that applies a direct application of intraoperative electron-beam radiation therapy (IOERT) to a tumor during cancer surgery.
PLA General Hospital is the leading center for medical and health services for Chinese government and military members. As the largest military hospital in China, PLA General Hospital sets the standard for other hospitals in China's military hospital system. In addition to its treatment facilities, PLA General Hospital operates a post-graduate medical school and has one of the most active medical research programs in China. The earliest hospital in China to incorporate IORT into their radiation protocols, PLA General Hospital has long been a proponent of IOERT. Previous studies conducted at PLA General Hospital have contributed greatly to understanding the role of IOERT in the treatment of lung cancer and hepatobiliary cancer. With the addition of the Mobetron, PLA General broadens their radiation options extensively.
The Mobetron enables radiation and surgical oncologists to target the exact area that requires radiation and to deliver high doses of radiation directly to the affected tissue during the cancer surgery. Before the Mobetron, PLA General patients had to be transported from the operating room to a shielded linear accelerator during surgery. This exposed the patient to bacteria and possible infection. Since the Mobetron is a mobile, self-shielding device, the hospital can move the Mobetron between three operating rooms with ease, avoiding the high cost of outfitting radiation rooms to accommodate traditional devices. Other key benefits include: better local tumor control, increased survival rates, shorter treatment cycles and fewer side effects.
Beijing is quickly becoming a major hub in China for IOERT development and treatment. After acquiring a Mobetron last year, the Cancer Institute & Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) began a long-term scholarly exchange with Ohio State University and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This program, in which PLA General Hospital will also participate, marks a long-term commitment to Chinese-American collaboration on IOERT education and research.
Don Goer, chief scientist of IntraOp, said, "We are pleased that doctors in China are embracing IOERT and the Mobetron as a tool in helping the fight against cancer. Our hope is that this purchase will spur a continuing dialogue in China, as well as other areas of this country, on the benefits of IOERT."
