HealthSteps is Offering Spring Specialty Classes
LEWISTON – HealthSteps, a health education and prevention program for adults that focuses on the whole person, offers a wide range of classes with the core membership fee as well as a variety of specialty classes, including:
“Lose With Me!”: It is a new 12-week session focused on helping participants obtain and maintain a healthy lifestyle. It will include goal setting, exercise planning, nutrition education, food and movement journaling and peer support and motivation. Dates are Wednesdays, April 9 to June 25, noon to 12:30 p.m.; cost, $50; d’Youville Pavilion Conference Room, 102 Campus Ave.
Tai chi: A Chinese movement art that improves balance, enhances respiratory capacity, lowers blood pressure and strengthens immune response. Thursdays, April 17 to July 5, 5 to 6:30 p.m.; instructor, Betsey Foster; cost, $97; Trolley Medical Rehab, Trolley Building, 77 Bates St.
Racquetball: Specific time slots are available for registration Monday through Friday on the hour for an hour from 6 a.m. until noon. Call 777-8898 for more information.
Ashtanga yoga, primary standing series: The beginner class is an athletic vinyasa format (meaning poses and breath energetically flow together into the next sequence of movements). Students will gain body strength, increased flexibility and peace and clarity of mind. Wear loose, not baggy clothing, or a leotard. Intermediate bellydancing: Dress comfortable in workout clothing or a long flowing skirt and comfortable top. Stocking or bare feet are preferred. Mondays, April 7, 14, 21, 28, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; instructor, Lisa Cummings; cost, $45; Lepage Large Conference Room, 99 Campus Ave.
Exercise for People with Arthritis: The class helps individuals improve range of motion, flexibility, muscle strength, posture, balance and coordination. Learn to Hoop: Learn how to hula hoop while getting a workout. A weighted hoop can be purchased at class if desired. Saturdays, April 12 to May 17, 7:30 to 8 a.m.; cost per session, $30; Lepage Large Conference Room.
Hoop for the Heart Core: The class combines cardiovascular and strength training. It is designed for those who already know how to hula hoop. Saturdays, April 12 to May 17, 8:05 to 8:35 a.m.; cost per session, $30; Lepage Large Conference Room.
Hoops: The class is ideal for those interested in health, fitness and fun. Participants will use a weighted hula hoop as a training aid to tone trouble spots. Tuesdays, April 1, 8, 15 and 22, from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m.; cost, $55, including a weighted hoop; $35 for those who already own a hoop; Lepage Large Conference Room.
Beginner Zumba: Learn a little Latin. Saturdays, April 12 to May 17, 8:45 to 9:15 a.m.; cost per session, $40; Lepage Large Conference Room.
Zumba: It a blend of Latin and international dance themes that combines high energy and motivating music with easy-to-follow dance steps and body sculpting movements. Tuesdays, April 1, 8, 15 and 22, from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m.; cost per session, $48; Lepage Large Conference Room.
Senior Fitness: The one-hour class provides participants with a safe and effective workout that includes a warm-up, cardiovascular component, resistance training to build strength, balance and flexibility exercises. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, April 14 to May 16, 9:15 to 10:15 or 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; instructor, Johanne Healey; cost per session, $30; Nutrition Center of Maine.
