Here’s How to Join the Program
Lace up the tennis shoes. It’s time to sign up for Summer Shape- Up. Summer Shape-Up is the Albuquerque Journal Fit magazine/ KOAT- TV family-friendly fitness challenge that begins May 31 and continues for eight weeks.
Sponsored by New Mexico Sports & Wellness, Lovelace Health Plan, SED Medical Laboratories, Sportz Outdoor and The Vitamin Trader, the program will feature family-friendly exercise classes, health- related seminars, nutrition counseling and health screenings.
Oh, and did we mention that you could win some great prizes?
During the eight-week program, participants will have access to the five Sports & Wellness athletic clubs. You’ll be able to use the clubs’ indoor-outdoor swimming pools, state-of-theart strength- training and cardio equipment, and other amenities such as whirlpools, steam rooms and saunas as much as you like.
Plus, you’ll get access to programs such as volleyball, children’s activities, regularly scheduled group fitness classes and more.
On top of all that, four family-friendly fitness classes specifically designed for the Summer Shape-Up program will be offered Wednesdays through Sundays, including classes featuring relays, obstacles and tag games, some of them competitive. There will also be special family-friendly studio cycling classes (kids need to be about 51 inches tall to fit on the bikes) and yoga.
The Vitamin Trader will offer two seminars a month on nutrition topics, including Sports Nutrition for The Whole Family, Fitness Nutrition for Kids, and How to Create Your Basic Nutrition Regimen. Lovelace will also offer health-related seminars.
Prizes, including gym memberships, tennis lessons, fitness equipment and more, will be awarded at a special post-program gettogether on Aug. 2.
To get started
Here’s how it works: Fill out the registration form printed on Page 11 in today’s Fit. You’ll also need to fill out several other forms, which you can download from abqjournal. com/fit or fill out when you complete your registration at a Sports & Wellness facility.
Take the completed forms to any New Mexico Sports & Wellness location between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily until April 30.
At registration, you’ll get a coupon for optional blood tests. If you take the coupon to SED Laboratories, you will be given cholesterol and blood glucose screenings. Then mark your calendar for the weekend of May 31 and June 1. New Mexico Sports & Wellness – - the Del Norte location — will host a kickoff event from 1 to 5 p.m. each day. During the kickoff, you will have your body composition determined for your “before” statistics.
If you are entering as a family, the kids will take part in a fitness evaluation in the form of an obstacle course featuring stations for push-ups, pull-ups and agility drills.
There will even be an opportunity to have an optional “before” photo taken by a professional photographer.
Similar “after” assessments will be done the weekend of July 25- 26 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Del Norte. Participants will need to attend one day of each event to be qualified for prizes.
Lovelace will be on hand at the kick-off to take blood pressures and perform heel scans to check bone density. The health-care provider will also have special “lifestyle counselors” available to help you get information on many wellness issues.
The Vitamin Trader and Sportz Outdoor will be represented with special give-aways, discount coupons and more.
Register the family for just $299, if you aren’t a Sports & Wellness member, (includes three people; each additional person is $25); couples are $259 and individuals $199. There are special rates for people who are Sports & Wellness members; check at your club desk for details.
