Cancer Treatment Centers of America Activates Eclipsys Sunrise Enterprise Solutions On-Time and On-Budget, Integrates Clinical and Financial Operations

Posted on: Wednesday, 16 April 2008, 09:01 CDT

Eclipsys Corporation®, (NASDAQ:ECLP), The Outcomes Company®, today announced that Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), Schaumburg, IL, has successfully completed a big-bang activation of numerous Eclipsys Sunrise Enterprise solutions at all of its hospitals, across multiple time zones, to integrate clinical and financial operations. On the first day of the activation, CTCA had already achieved 100-percent adoption of computerized physician order entry system of Sunrise Acute Care™ and Sunrise Knowledge-Based Charting™ for clinical documentation - two critical success factors to help the organization achieve improved outcomes.

"At Cancer Treatment Centers of America, we pride ourselves on our unique approach to care delivery and commitment to deliver the best possible patient experience," said Chad A. Eckes, MBA, PMP, chief information officer, Cancer Treatment Centers of America. "Sunrise Enterprise has proven to be flexible enough to meet the needs of our very complex, high-acuity care environment. Our joint effort to bring the project in on an 18 month schedule and on-budget with 100 percent adoption of CPOE speaks to the strong commitment from both organizations to execute a successful activation. Although the project was very complex, our joint team focused on rigorous project management controls to deliver the effort on-target. We are very excited about the rapid time to value we achieved, which confirms we made the right decision to partner with Eclipsys over the competition."

Improving Coordination of Care to Provide the Best-Possible Patient Experience

CTCA specializes in treating cancer patients living with complex and advanced-stage disease within a comprehensive, fully integrated treatment model. Patients often travel across the country and between the CTCA hospitals for this unique, highly specialized care model that intricately combines traditional, state-of-the-art medical treatments with scientifically-supported complementary therapies. With Eclipsys' Sunrise Acute Care and Sunrise Ambulatory Care™ now live, its clinicians have a complete clinical summary of each patient wherever he or she presents. The clinical summary provides a comprehensive overview of inpatient and outpatient patient data, including the ability to review and change orders, results, documentation, medications and allergies, helping improve care coordination to help provide the best and safest possible patient experience.

CTCA is also using the Tracking Board of Sunrise Emergency Care™ to quickly prioritize care based on acuity, chief complaint and organizational protocols to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of care delivered in its Emergency Department.

"Cancer Treatment Centers of America is a multi-facility, rapidly growing healthcare organization and the successful execution of such a complex, big-bang activation of Sunrise Enterprise solutions is a testament to its remarkable organizational discipline," said R. Andrew Eckert, Eclipsys president and chief executive officer. "Like many of today's healthcare enterprises, CTCA understands the value of integrating clinical and financial operations to help achieve maximum outcome improvements."

"CTCA also represents Eclipsys ability to win new clients because of our proven ability to help manage complex care environments," added Eckert.

Integrated Medication Management for Safer Delivery of Complex Medications

Clinicians at CTCA are using Sunrise Acute Care's advanced capabilities for computerized physician order entry (CPOE), and Knowledge-Based Charting for clinical documentation to ensure standard care practices and medication ordering protocols are followed across its organization. With the activation of Sunrise Pharmacy, CTCA now has an integrated medication ordering and delivery system to help ensure safe medication management.

Administering chemotherapy is a high-risk proposition, and Eclipsys solutions provide capabilities for maximum allowable dose capabilities, order signature policies, and order sequencing to help make sure patients receive the right dose of medication at the right time. The system also helps CTCA manage both approved and experimental medications used for the treatment of all types of cancer.

"Eclipsys' solutions are playing a critical role in helping improve our care delivery, as we seek to standardize our evidence-based and best practice care processes at each of our locations," said Edgar D. Staren, MD, PhD, chief medical officer, Cancer Treatment Centers of America. "Our ability to achieve 100 percent adoption of CPOE immediately following the activation is a testament to the importance of providing a robust yet flexible electronic health records solution combined with our physician's faith that such a system will facilitate their providing the highest level of quality in patient care."

Improved Financial Operations

CTCA also activated Sunrise Enterprise Registration™ to extend the power of the EMR to gather patient data as soon as an individual enters the healthcare system and Sunrise Patient Financials™ to better manage the business of healthcare by delivering cleaner claims, reducing days in accounts receivable, increasing cash flow and enhancing patient services. CTCA is also using Sunrise Enterprise Scheduling™ to manage resources, and create and schedule appointments across all of its care settings.
