Ont. Creates $500,000 for Families of Patients Waiting for Organ Donation

By THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO - Ontario families who have to temporarily move to another city while a loved one waits for a life-saving organ donation will get some financial help.

Health Minister George Smitherman says a $500,000 annual fund will provide direct aid to families who have to spend months living near the hospital where the transplant will take place.

Smitherman says he hopes the organization that runs Ontario's organ donor program, the Trillium Gift of Life Network, can raise more money privately to add to the province's yearly contribution.

The government also announced details today of its program to compensate people who agree to become living organ donors for out-of-pocket expenses.

Starting April 1, people who agree to donate an organ or part of an organ can apply to be compensated for travel costs, hotels, meals and even lost income.

That program will be retroactive to last August, when Premier Dalton McGuinty first promised up to $5,500 in compensation for living donors.
