Tanzania: Doctor Says Ailments Causing Kidney Failure Rampant

Posted on: Sunday, 13 March 2005, 03:00 CST

Text of report by Radio Tanzania on 13 March

The government used over 350m shillings between 2003-2004 to treat five patients suffering from kidney diseases in India.

The patients were taken to India for kidney transplantation due to lack of the treatment locally.

A kidney specialist at the Muhimbili national hospital Dr Ezekiel Linda said the cost was too high for the government.

Presenting a paper at the second meeting of people dealing with kidney diseases in Dar es Salaam, he said instead of taking patients abroad for treatment, the money would have been spent in buying equipment and to train local experts.

Speaking about the rate of kidney diseases in the country, Dr Linda said although there were no figures on the prevalence of kidney ailments the situation was grim because many diseases that cause kidney problems were rampant in the country. These include: hypertension; diabetes; heart diseases; AIDS; malaria; and injuries caused by accidents.
