PITTSBURGH, April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- UPMC Health Plan and Rainbow Kitchen Community Services announced today that they will host the fourth annual "W.A.R. (Walk and Ride) Against Hunger" on Saturday, April 26, 2008. The event is a walk/bicycle-ride that supports Rainbow Kitchen's anti-hunger programs and services, and raises public awareness about the benefits of health and wellness.
"W.A.R. Against Hunger" participants can either walk or ride bicycles along the South Side Trail, beginning at the IBEW Local Union #5 parking lot located at 5 Hot Metal Street in the South Side, and continue on to Station Square. Free parking will be available to all participants, and a rest station with refreshments will be available for all participants in Riverfront Park.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the IBEW parking lot. This year's Health and Wellness Expo will offer free health screenings and information, with a focus on diabetes and childhood obesity. At 10 a.m. Pittsburgh Steelers great and honorary chair Dwight White will kick off the event and send walkers and riders down the riverfront trail toward Station Square. "I love being a part of this event. It supports and reaches out to people in our town who need it. We all hit rough patches now and then, and it's important we take care of one another in tough times. If we're going to tackle anything, hunger, wellness and nutrition should all be at the top of the list."
This year's W.A.R. Against Hunger will feature a prize drawing that includes an autographed Steelers football, gift certificates to some of the city's best restaurants, a convection/rotisserie oven, Pirates tickets and hotel getaway weekends.
UPMC Health Plan, the title sponsor, has issued a matching challenge, and will provide a 20% match on every dollar raised for the W.A.R. Against Hunger. Other major sponsors include the Pittsburgh Steelers, Multimodal Technologies Inc., WHEMCO, Inc. and ASKO, Inc.
Participants can register online at http://www.rainbowkitchen.org/ or by calling 412-464-1892. Registration is $15 for adults and $10 for participants age 18 and under. All proceeds support Rainbow Kitchen's programs, which reach out to low-income individuals and families to address hunger, child nutrition and a wide variety of additional supportive services. Every participant will receive a free W.A.R. Against Hunger T-shirt and a ticket for the prize drawing; additional prize drawing tickets will be awarded based on pledge money raised. The event ends at 1 p.m., when winners of the drawing will be awarded their gifts.
