Le Race Good for Teamwork

Posted on: Tuesday, 15 March 2005, 15:00 CST

Corporates keen for some staff team bonding with some fitness goals in mind should dust off bikes for the Le Race Corporate Challenge. It is one of several new initiatives planned for the seventh annual running of Le Race on April 2.

"Businesses just need to get four people together who plan to compete as individuals, and the team's winning time is when the last member crosses the finish line," Le Race organiser Astrid Andersen says. "It will add a whole new dimension to the event.

"For the less serious, teams of four offer a more social approach to the event, and often the most crazy costumes on race day come from the team competitors -- in the past French maids, frogs, cancan girls and even Austin Powers have been sighted on the course."

The 100km event covers some of Banks Peninsula's toughest hillclimbs and has a developed a loyal following of local competitors in its six-year history. The views, the serious hill climbs and winding roads mean the event has been described as being the Kiwi equivalent of a mountain stage of the Tour de France.

As well as the Corporate Challenge, a mountain bike challenge has been introduced. Competitors must have 26-inch wheels and mountain bike handle bars to be eligible for this category, says Andersen

"Everyone who enters Le Race is in the draw to win a trip to Paris, courtesy of Harvey World Travel, so it's time to dust off the bike and get out on the road."

Training rides for Le Race are being run by the team at John Bull Cycles every Monday. Rides are between 40km and 50km, so riders should allow for about a couple of hours, dress for the weather and bring plenty of fluids. Meet outside the shop on the corner of Colombo and Tuam Streets ready to leave at 6pm.

Entries for Le Race close on April 1, and entries received after March 22 will incur an administration fee.
