Dutch doctor faces punishment for providing internet medical service
BRUSSELS, March 15 (Xinhua) -- The Dutch health care inspectorate is to start disciplinary proceedings against a doctor for providing medical service on the Internet, Radio Netherlands reported Tuesday.
The doctor, who provides patients with services on the internet website doctorsonline.com., supplied a depressed woman with painkillers which she subsequently used to commit suicide.
"The inspectorate accuses the Internet doctor of a failure in his duty of care and the contravention of Dutch medical guidelines, " the report said.
The Dutch Lower House wants to ban giving medical prescriptions over the internet, citing the safety concerns.
However, the doctorsonline website said that patients can only receive medicine after filling in a long questionnaire which is evaluated by a registered doctor. If there are any queries the doctor telephones the patient. A a spokesperson for the Internet site said that conventional doctors can also be misled by suicidal patients.
