Colon Surgery Better at NCI Hospital

Posted on: Monday, 28 April 2008, 15:00 CDT

Having colon or rectal cancer surgery at a National Cancer Institute-designated hospital greatly improves short- and long-term survival, a U.S. study found.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia found having colon or rectal surgeries at one of the country's hospitals designated by the National Cancer Institute was linked to a lowered risk of postoperative death and improved long-term survival rates.

Study leader Dr. Najjia Mahmoud and colleagues used National Cancer Institute Surveillance Epidemiological and End Result from more than 52,000 patients across the United States from 1996 to 2003.

The findings, presented at the American Surgical Association Annual Meeting in New York, are scheduled to be published in the Annals of Surgery later in the year.

The researchers suggest possible reasons for the improved short- and long-term outcomes for colon and rectal surgeries at National Cancer Institute-designated facilities may include surgeon training, multi-disciplinary care and adherence to treatment guidelines. The researchers said studies are underway to further clarify the factors leading to improved patient outcomes
