Best Way to Find Prostate Cancer Found

March 16, 2005

St. Louis researchers say the best way to spot prostate cancer is by combining the prostate-specific antigen blood test and the digital rectal exam.

Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and several other institutions are engaged in a massive study to see if current screening practices can cut the number of deaths from prostate cancer.

Although the study will continue until 2019, initial results confirm combining the two tests, known as the PSA and the DRE, appears to be the most effective way to find prostate cancer.

These initial findings are summarized in two papers, one published in Wednesday’s issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute and the other published in the March issue of the Journal of Urology.
