Preservation Month Celebrated
PASQUOTANK COUNTY | The National Trust for Historic Preservation will celebrate the fourth annual National Preservation Month in May.
The Elizabeth City Historic Preservation Commission will join the celebration with a series of programs, tours and how-to workshops.
Today’s event will feature Reid Thomas, restoration specialist with the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office, speaking on Tax Credits for Historic Preservation at 6 p.m. at St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church.
On Saturday, there will be a walking tour of the Main Street historic districts, with Bonnie Calliotte meeting at 9:30 a.m. at the corner of Main and Water streets.
At 11 a.m., Debbie Sauls will speak on the Preservation and Care of Trees for Historic Preservation and Beyond at W.C. Witherspoon Memorial Library parking lot.

Finance officer wraps up course
Bonnie Swain, finance officer for the town of Southern Shores, has graduated from the 2007- 08 municipal administration course of the School of Government at the University of North Carolina.
The course includes local government and employment law, organization and management, finance and budgeting, administration, planning and the regulation of development and the delivery of specific city or county services.

Church Women United will host May Friendship Day on Friday at All Saints Episcopal Church in Southern Shores.
Registration is at 9:30 a.m., and the program, “God’s Wisdom Inspires Hospitality,” is at 10 a.m. A continental breakfast and the annual dedication of offerings to the Fellowship of the Least Coin will be part of the event.
GIRL SCOUT PARTY IS sET for saturday
A Daisy Girl Scout Princess Party is planned from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Wanchese Community Center.
Parents and girls entering kindergarten and first grade are invited to attend and learn more about the Girl Scout program.
CASA MEETING set for FRIDAY
The Dare Coalition Against Substance Abuse will meet from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Kill Devil Hills Town Hall.
A special program, “Substance Abuse Continuum of Care: The Role of the Faith Community,” will be presented at 10 a.m. by Mike Dublin. Dublin will be available from 11 a.m. to noon for an informal discussion about substance abuse with leaders and members of the faith community. It’s free, and the public is invited to attend.

Key west parrot heads dance party
USA Dance Chapter 6102 will hold a Key West Parrot Heads Dance Party at 7:30 p.m. Friday at The Pines at Elizabeth City.
Dance lessons will be held at 7:30 p.m., followed by general dancing at 8:30 p.m. Members, $5; non members, $8; students, $3.

Relay for life car wash fundraiser
The Mount Hermon Methodist Church Youth Relay for Life team will hold a car wash from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Advance Auto Parts, 1105 W. Ehringhaus St.
All proceeds will benefit the Pasquotank/Camden Relay for Life.

Albemarle Regional Health Service will hold a yard sale for Relay for Life from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Pasquotank Health Department and Social Services Building, 711 Roanoke Ave.
Booth rental is $5 per space, and tables are $5 each.
All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
Exhibit features homestead
The Museum of the Albemarle will present “Life on an Albemarle Colonial Homestead” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Experience what life was like for the Albemarle’s first settlers as re-enactors and interpreters demonstrate an encampment complete with cooking and clothing. There will be an opportunity to dip candles, make butter and try on colonial period clothing. Learn about different crops and animals that early settlers would have raised.
