The free workshop series are appropriate for people diagnosed with disorders such as asthma, arthritis, cancer, lung disease, congestive heart failure, diabetes, depression, fibromyalgia, heart disease, obesity and Parkinson's disease. They also are open to family members and other caregivers.
Participants will learn techniques for responding to problems associated with long-term illness, including frustration, fatigue, pain and social isolation. They will also learn about improving overall health and outlook through exercise, medications, nutrition and effective communication with family, friends and health care professionals.
The "Living Well" program was developed by staff at Stanford University and Kaiser Permanente in California for patients and caregivers.
The first six-week "Living Well" session in Belfast will run from May 21 to June 25. The second session will run from Aug. 6 to Sept. 10. Classes will be held on consecutive Wednesdays from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Waldo County General Hospital education center at 118 Northport Ave. Free transportation is available to residents of Waldo and Knox counties.
Class size is limited and pre-registration is encouraged. For more information or to register, contact Jo-Ann Whiting at 930- 6733.
Funding for the program was made possible through a grant from MaineHealth's Partnership for Healthy Aging and the Office of Elder Services within the state's Department of Health and Human Services.
