A 23-year-old Michigan man was hurt Wednesday when he fell about 80 feet while climbing in Colorado, authorities said.
Derek Anderson, 23, was listed in good condition at a Denver-area hospital with possible broken bones and cuts, KUSA-TV in Denver reported.
The accident occurred while Anderson was climbing with a friend near the Eldora Ski Resort, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office said. The friend, Joe Harbison of Westminster, Colo., climbed down and walked about a mile to reach a call box and alert emergency crews, the TV station reported.
We got up to this one point, he grabbed a rock and it came loose, Harbison told KUSA-TV. He fell with it ... tumbled five times, landed face down all mangled up.
It took emergency responders about five hours to get Anderson off the mountain so he could be airlifted to the hospital.
Harbison said Anderson came close to falling a couple of hundred feet more.
He'd probably be dead, he said.
