Six Ways to Avoid Winter Fatigue
Posted on: Tuesday, 22 March 2005, 09:00 CST
Due to an overwhelming response to our feature on winter fatigue syndrome in last week's Health Wales, here is stress expert David Lewis's plan to help avoid its affects:
Take 20 minutes of exercise in the fresh air at least three times a week. If you don't fancy jogging a brisk walk is sufficient. All that matters is to exercise sufficiently hard to raise your heart rate by a modest amount.
Try to work by natural light as much as possible. If you work by artificial light then, if you are able, use daylight-balanced light bulbs of the type used by artists. If neither is possible snatch every spare opportunity to spend time in daylight. Even the weaker winter sunshine is sufficient to influence your internal clocks.
Make sure your diet is rich in essential vitamins and minerals by eating fresh food whenever possible, especially fruit and vegetables. Take a complete multivitamin with probiotics once a day to top up your system.
Give yourself a daily treat, such as a relaxing in an aromatherapy bath or treating yourself to a massage. It need not cost a fortune and will ensure you have something to look forward to throughout the day.
Get as much sleep as you can. Catnapping for 15-20 minutes each day can recharge your batteries for hours. Even just sitting quietly with your eyes closed for the same amount of time will put the spring back into your step.
Remember, worrying is a misuse of the imagination. First stop the nagging worry by saying, silently but firmly, STOP. Now work out what practical steps can be taken to resolve that problem or remove those concerns.
SCHOOLGIRL Chloe Phillips has become the face of the latest Parkinson's Disease Society campaign after helping raise money to help her grandfather.
The Chloe, 9, from Bridgend, wanted to fund- raise 'to make Grampy better', by doing a sponsored walk up Snowdon. She successfully raised pounds 3,000 for the society and even received good luck letters from the Queen and Tony Blair.
The poster campaign, which will coincide with Parkinson's awareness week from April 11, will raise the profile of the society.
