THE recent launch of the International Foundation for Medicine by the University of St Andrews has received an overwhelming response from students in Malaysia and Singapore.

Last year, the university, established in 1413, handpicked five students from Malaysia for the programme. All have now settled in and doing well in their studies.

Judging from their progress, they should be ready to get into the first-year medicine programme in September 2009.

University of St Andrews is the third oldest university in the United Kingdom after Oxford and Cambridge, and has consistently been ranked highly in various disciplines, including medicine and sciences.

This state-of-the-art university will soon celebrate its 600th anniversary.

Medicine was the third discipline or degree programme offered by this prestigious institution since it was established.

In other words, the medical school is nearly 600 years old now.

If your ambition is joining University of St Andrews, the key is to plan ahead as competition for places is intense.

This includes understanding the required grades of these programmes, plus other requirements set out by the department, such as additional entrance or aptitude tests, and how to put together a strong application.

Students who have completed or will be completing STPM or A- levels equivalent qualification and wish to enter its Faculty of Medicine or Sciences, may make an appointment for an interview on May 17 (Kuala Lumpur) or May 18 (Penang).

The university is interviewing candidates for the September 2009 and September 2010 intakes.

Students who have completed or will be completing SPM or O- levels equivalent qualification and wish to pursue a degree in medicine or health sciences may register for its foundation in science and medicine entrance test.

Dr Maureen Crosby and Mary Ainsworth from the Faculty of Medicine will be visiting Malaysia and Singapore this month to host a seminar about its medicine and health sciences programme. Topics include medicine and health sciences pathways.
