Flint Hill Residents Will Honor Vets Sunday

May 13–The Flint Hill Memorial Association will have a community event to honor veterans at 2 p.m. Sunday at Flint Hill Baptist Church, 269 Flint Hill St., Fort Mill.
For 117 years, the people of the Flint Hill community have come together on the third Sunday in May to honor more than 200 military veterans buried in the church cemetery. The Fort Mill High School JROTC Corps will present the colors and a salute will be fired by the Eli Bailes American Legion Post 43 of Fort Mill. Speaker will be Lt. Cmdr. James Burns of the U.S. Navy, a 12-year veteran.
Burns is a Fort Mill native and a graduate of the Citadel and the University of South Carolina School of Law. He is serving as deputy assistant for legal and legislative matters to the vice chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon.
York bluegrass night features Express

Tega Cay Lions host Night of Honor
The Tega Cay Lions Club will hold its first Night of Honor at 6 p.m. May 22 at the Philip T. Glennon Community Center in Tega Cay. A cash bar will be at 6 p.m. followed by a sit-down dinner, speaker and special awards.

Area shag clubs plans May 31 bash
The Upper South Carolina Midlands Shag clubs will have its fifth Saturday Bash from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. May 31 at the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post, 732 W. Main St., Rock Hill. The event is for ages 21 and older.
Clyde Waller will DJ. Admission is $10 per person. Participants are asked to bring hors d’ouevres. The dance floor is smoke-free. A smoking area will be provided. Activities include 50/50 drawing, a cash bar and more.

York choral programs present may 20 concert
The choral programs of York Junior High and York Comprehensive High Schools will have a spring concert at 7:15 p.m. May 20 at the McCelvey Center, 212 E. Jefferson St., York. The women’s ensemble, the concert choir and the eighth-grade chorus will perform.
The program will highlight selections from the Broadway musical, “Oklahoma,” and will feature several soloists. Admission is $3 at the door.

Local awareness day is planned Saturday
An annual health safety and environmental awareness day, “Kids Day America/International,” will be from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Body Church, 1711 Cherry Road, Rock Hill.
Dr. Werner of Werner Family Chiropractic is sponsoring the event, which will provide information on crime prevention, Internet and child safety and environmental awareness. Werner’s office will donate child identification cards to every child who attends. The Rock Hill Police Department will provide free fingerprinting for all children.
There will be appearances by McGruff, the crime dog, Spanky the fire dog, State Farm’s “Neigh Bear,” free giveaways and prize drawings, including the chance to win a kids’ four-wheeler. A fire truck will be on display and the fire department will teach fire safety. Werner will provide free health screenings and will distribute information on disease prevention and health promotion. Donations for York County Foster Parents Association will be accepted at the event.
Local art demos planned in downtown
Local artists will demonstrate their techniques from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at City Plaza at 140 E. Main St., Rock Hill. Featured artists include Jay Thompson, painting; Linda Meetze Lucas, jewelry; Alan Noll, ceramic sculpture; Liz Funderburk, knot tie for gem stones; Nancy Ray, black and white pen and ink drawings; Jackie Clarkin, painting; Holly Glasscock, watercolor; and Bob Thrower, basket weaving and wood carving. Local author to give program on Scottish poet
Martha Macdonald, a local storyteller, dancer, musician, writer and English professor, will present a program on Scotland’s beloved poet, Robert Burns, at 7 p.m. May 19 at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 321 South Oakland Ave., Rock Hill.
Macdonald will share stories, sing, dance the Highland Fling and read poems. The program is free and open to the public. Macdonald recently published a new book, “Psaltery at White Oaks,” a novel about generations of female descendants, starting in 1763. For details, call Pat at 980-4000.
Landsford Canal trip planned on June 14
A day trip exploring Landsford Canal with geologist Irene Boland, natural history curator Steve Fields and historian Michael Scoggins will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 14.
The group will meet at the Museum of York County, 4621 Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill. Participants must be 18 years old because of van restrictions. Landsford Canal is the home of the rare Rocky Shoals spider lilies. Participants will learn the natural and cultural history of the area and are asked to wear hiking appropriate clothing, bring a bag lunch, water and sunscreen. ‘Story of stuff’ to be shown at York library
The York County chapter of the South Carolina Green Party will show a film, the “Story of Stuff,” which explains the global economy, at 7 p.m. Thursday at the York Public Library, 21 E. Liberty St., York.

Catawba seniors gathering for benefit
The Catawba Seniors Gathering will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Outdoors at Green Earth Athletic Field, 2900 Sturgis Road, Rock Hill. The event is a fundraiser for the Catawba Indian Nation Senior Center. Activities include a Native American pottery, drum, dance, food and crafts. Admission is free. Neighborhood group will meet Thursday
The Spencer Estates Neighborhood Association will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Media Center at Belleview Elementary School, 501 Belleview Road, Rock Hill. Mike Kropp will discuss landscaping for drought conditions.
