Weekend World War Ii Encampment Planned
World War II paratroopers, pilots and GIs will camp on the lawn of the Lancaster County Historical Society, 230 N. President Ave., Friday through Sunday
More than 75 re-enactors, canvas tents, and a fleet of military vehicles will transform the grounds into a living-history lesson.
There will be displays of WWII memorabilia and military and home- front fashions.
The encampment will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday May 18. Admission to the encampment is free.
Also, Crystal Bollinger will speak about the life of Gen. Daniel Strickler at the Historical Society’s Regional History Colloquium on Friday. Refreshments are served at 4 p.m., and the lecture starts at 4:30.
Persons interested in collecting oral histories can attend a workshop, Whispering Down the Lane: How to Conduct an Oral History, from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. The session will be led by Stauffer curator Barry Rauhauser. Topics will include the interview process, methods and techniques and transcribing and editing your interview.
Cost for the class is $20 for members of the Historical Society and $25 for nonmembers. To register, call 392-4633.
A dance will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday with music provided by the Moonlighters. Admission is $5. Bring lawn chairs.
Organizers are requesting help with the annual photo harvest in preparation for the Historical Society’s fourth photographic history book, Lancaster At War.
images of wartime activities from the Civil War to the present will be scanned and returned from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
