MAP Pharmaceuticals Appoints New Vice President of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 28 /PRNewswire/ -- MAP Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a leading developer of novel inhaled drug products, today announced the appointment of Stephen B. Shrewsbury, M.D., to the position of Vice President, Clinical and Regulatory Affairs. In this role, Dr. Shrewsbury will be responsible for coordinating and managing all clinical and regulatory activities at MAP, including clinical program development and execution, regulatory filing preparation and submission, and quality assurance.
Dr. Shrewsbury is an experienced industry veteran who brings MAP more than 24 years of expertise in the medical field with specific focus in the areas of research, clinical development, medical affairs and commercialization. Prior to joining the company, he served as Senior Director of Clinical Development at Chiron Corporation. In this position, Dr. Shrewsbury led a 15-person team that was responsible for advancing a number of novel inhaled therapeutics into and through the clinical stages of development. This work included development of clinical programs and protocols, oversight of clinical trials, statistical data analysis, and negotiations with FDA. While at Chiron, Dr. Shrewsbury also served as co-chair of the company's biopharma-wide protocol review committee and their safety coding committee. In 2004, he was appointed to IPAC-RS Board of Directors, a pan-industry consortium responsible for ongoing dialogue with the FDA and other organizations regarding inhaled drug delivery.
Prior to his work with Chiron, Dr. Shrewsbury held the positions of director and senior clinical program head of respiratory clinical development at GlaxoSmithKline. While at GlaxoSmithKline, he played a critical role in the development of Flovent HFA by designing, initiating and directing the product's pivotal clinical program and filing the Flovent HFA NDA. This submission represented the first alternative propellant NDA reviewed and approved by FDA. In addition to his work with GlaxoSmithKline, he has also served as associate medical director for respiratory, allergy, GI and smoking cessation, as well as medical affairs team leader, at GlaxoWellcome UK.

A highly-regarded expert in the field of respiratory medicine, Dr. Shrewsbury is credited with more than 30 publications in leading journals such as the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, British Medical Journal, European Respiratory Journal, Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology and International Journal of Pharmaceutical Medicine. Furthermore, Dr. Shrewsbury is a member or fellow of several leading medical groups, including the Royal College of General Practitioners, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology, the American College of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology, and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine.
Dr. Shrewsbury earned a diploma in pharmaceutical medicine from the Royal College of Physician's (UK) Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine, a diploma of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (UK), and bachelors' degrees in medicine and surgery from Liverpool University. He has also held a number of medical residency positions in areas such as respiratory/pulmonary disease, primary care, and pediatrics and neonatology.
