Posted on: Monday, 19 May 2008, 12:00 CDT

HARRISBURG, Pa., May 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Residents have until June 17 to comment in writing on the Department of Aging's draft of the State Plan on Aging for 2008-2012. The plan is now available at http://www.aging.state.pa.us/.

"The input of the 2,500 individuals who attended our eight town meetings helped us to develop this draft of the plan, which will guide programs and services for seniors for the next four years," said Department of Aging Secretary Nora Dowd Eisenhower. "However, we still encourage older adults and their advocates to provide feedback on the draft plan by attending one of three upcoming public hearings or submitting written comments."

Written comments may be directed to: Rocco Claroni, Pennsylvania Department of Aging, Systems Planning and Consultation Division, 555 Walnut Street, 5th Floor, Harrisburg, Pa. 17101-1919.

The public hearing schedule is as follows: -- June 3 - Community College of Allegheny County South Campus - Auditorium in Building B, 1750 Clairton Road, West Mifflin, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. -- June 4 - The Oaks at Pleasant Gap, Community Room, 200 Rachel Drive, Pleasant Gap, 10 a.m. to noon. -- June 6 - New Courtland Germantown Home Education Building Auditorium, 6950 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Anyone wishing to speak at the hearings must call to schedule a time. There is a 10-minute limit for testimony. To schedule a time or request accommodation because of a disability, contact Kyle Kessler at (717) 783-3127 no later than May 29.

Required by state and federal law to be updated every four years, the State Plan on Aging helps the Department of Aging to prioritize the needs and desires of older citizens in areas such as housing, transportation, wellness and fitness programs, legal assistance and long-term living options. The plan covers a range of topics, including ways for seniors to stay active and healthy and help prevent abuse, neglect, exploitation and abandonment.

The final plan will be submitted to Governor Edward G. Rendell for his signature before being submitted to the federal Administration on Aging on or before Aug. 1. The new plan will take effect Oct. 1.
