Survey: More Kids Hospitalized for Alcohol

Nearly 5,000 British children under the age of 18 were hospitalized in 2007 because they drank too much alcohol, government data revealed.
Averaged out, the National Health Service data indicated almost 100 children a week wound up in hospital because of drinking alcohol, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday. The data also indicated the overall number of people admitted to British health facilities because of drinking doubled in just more than a decade.
The survey of children found more were staying away from alcohol and nearly half said they never had an alcoholic drink, the British newspaper said. But under-aged drinkers who said they do drink indicated they're consuming more, NHS said.
About 20 percent of 11- to 15-year-olds said they drank in the last week, consuming the equivalent of four pints of lager or four large classes of wine -- the highest figures NHS said it ever recorded.
