TWO cancer survivors braved new heights to launch an adventure challenge in aid of a pounds 1m new treatment centre for youngsters in the North.

Students Catherine Rhatigan, 18, and Laura Howe, 20, were both treated at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.

At the launch of the Rat Race, the friends, both of Teesside, abseiled the 40ft wall at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead to kickstart the event in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Competitors will be able to take part in running, biking, kayaking, abseiling and a challenge to navigate their way around the city during the event on August 30.

Organiser David Powell said: “Events are taking place in eight cities across the country which will be used as a playground.”

All funds raised will go towards the appeal to build a new Teenage Cancer Trust unit at the RVI in Newcastle.

Entries, being taken until August 10, are pounds 69 per person.
