YMCA Challenges You to Make a Mad DASH

Posted on: Thursday, 31 March 2005, 21:00 CST

Need some muscle motivation? Maybe light a fitness fire under your ever-expanding butt? The South Shore YMCA in Quincy is gearing up for a new fitness challenge, Mad DASH Makeover, that involves a 10-week exercise and nutrition challenge.

You don't have to have the best bod to win. You just have to have the best overall results. The winners are determined based on improvements in body composition - muscle to fat ratio - and measurements (hips for women, waist for men). The measurements and body composition tests are conducted before and after the Mad DASH. A series of before and after photos also will be taken of each participant. Entrants can choose to perform their workouts from a variety of fitness options in strength training, cardio and stretching. Fitness Research Director Wayne Westcott and Associate Fitness Research Director Rita La Rosa Loud - the Y's fitness gurus - will give you all the training and recommendations you need to work up a sweat and drop those pounds - sensibly.

What does all of this sweating and sacrificing get you? Well, in addition to toning, tightening, losing weight and feeling stronger and healthier, the top male and top female contestants will receive a free one-year membership to the South Shore YMCA, a haircut from Eugene Thomas Salon stylist Scott Cousineau and a manicure from aesthetician Lisa Forte-Puffer, also of Eugene Thomas Salon in Quincy. The top woman also receives a makeup application.

The winners get to show off their new bodies in a complete outfit with accessories from Talbots in Hingham.

Prizes also will be awarded to second and third place winners.

A kickoff meeting is scheduled for March 31 with in-house nutritionist Karen Yee. The Mad DASH will be held April 4 to June 11.

To register, call La Rosa Loud at 617-479-8500, Ext. 138. Registration is under way. The South Shore YMCA is at 79 Coddington St., Quincy.
