A 22 year study of 85,987 women between 30 and 55 years of age recently revealed that coffee and tea consumption do not affect breast cancer risk.Dr. Davaasambuu Ganmaa, of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, recently revealed, “In this large cohort of women, with 22 years of follow-up, we observed no association between coffee (caffeinated or decaffeinated) and tea consumption and the risk of breast cancer.”
Ganmaa claims the two beverages are safe as long as they are consumed in moderation. These results should enable women to be worry-free when drinking coffee and tea .
Throughout the duration of the study, 5,272 of the women involved in the Nurses’ Health Study whose coffee, tea, and caffeine consumption were assessed developed breast cancer.
Once external factors associated with breast cancer risk were accounted for the researchers found no more risk of breast cancer among women who consume 4 or more cups of caffeinated or decaffeinated tea or coffee per day, than in those who drank less than one cup daily. The external factors taken into account included: age, family history, body mass, smoking status, body mass, physical activity, alcohol intake, number of children, history of hormone therapy, and menopausal status.
The research also showed no association between intake of other caffeinated beverages and chocolate and breast cancer.
In postmenopausal women, when breast cancer risk was further evaluated, researchers found that risk was reduced with higher caffeine intake. Researchers say this relationship needs to be further examined before forming conclusions.
