China boasts 920,000 ha. standardized plantation of medicinal herbs
MACAO, April 1 (Xinhua) -- China has cultivated 920,000 ha. standardized plantation of medicinal herbs, said Liu Yanhua, vice minister of science and technology at the International Conference on Chinese Medicine opened here on Friday.
China has set up 448 production bases in 18 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities for cultivating standard Chinese medicine, which are shaping up a complete production and commercial chain for developing modern Chinese medicine, Liu said.
The ministry supervised a panel consisting of some 100 experts nationwide to draft out a guideline for boosting the modernization of the Chinese medicine industry in 1997, which was passed by China 's State Council in 2002 as a state circular.
Liu said that with the attachment given to the sector, China has substantially improved the research and development level as well as production ability of Chinese medicine.
He pointed out in particular that when the epidemic of SARS ( severe acute respiratory syndrome) post a threat to the world in 2003, Chinese medicine has played an important role in the prevention against the disease, which has won a high commendation from the World Health Organization.
