Clinical Trials at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas

Posted on: Wednesday, 28 May 2008, 12:00 CDT

Researchers at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas are seeking study participants for the following clinical trials. All clinical trials are approved through the Institutional Review Board at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, which reviews the studies for side effects, safety and benefits.

Smoking study

Scientists at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas are conducting an exercise study to determine the effectiveness of a new medication for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Qualified participants include current and former smokers with COPD. Researchers are trying to determine if certain medications can increase exercise endurance among people with COPD. Eligible subjects receive lung tests, electrocardiograms, a pedometer, physical exams and a stipend for their participation. For information, contact Gina Henry at 214-345-6762.

Breast feeding study

Grandmothers often wonder how they can help their daughters or daughters-in-law after they have a baby, especially if they're trying to breastfeed. Researchers at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas are hosting a "Grandmothers' Tea" on June 1 as part of a study to find out how best grandmothers can support daughters who are trying to establish good breastfeeding habits with their newborns. The event is free. For more information, call Jane Grassley at 972-890-1515.

Breast cancer study

Most breast cancers require the female hormone estrogen to grow. Drugs that reduce estrogen have been successful in reducing the recurrence of some breast cancers. The SOFT trial evaluates standard oral chemotherapies with the addition of ovarian suppression to further reduce the amount of estrogen in the body. This study is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and is currently recruiting premenopausal women with breast cancer. Eligible patients will have most study medications provided free of charge. For information, contact Lauren Braunfeld at 214-345-2619.
