Eliza Corporation Presents Practical Applications of Health Behavior Change Models
Posted on: Thursday, 29 May 2008, 15:00 CDT
Eliza Corporation presented a series of practical applications of health behavior models and their associated outcomes at the 13th Annual ISPOR International Meeting. IMS Health was a co-presenter with Eliza at the ISPOR meeting, which drew healthcare researchers from all disciplines conducting healthcare outcomes research.
Moving from Theory to Practice
The presentation and workshop highlighted the fundamentals of health behavior change, with supporting examples from Eliza's phone-based, speech enabled patient outreach programs.
Examples from actual Eliza applications illustrated how their advanced Interaction Design methodologies incorporate behavior change models into real world conversations with individuals over the phone. The presentation also shared some surprising findings that demonstrate that what works in theory doesn't always translate "in the wild."
"For healthcare communications to be effective, it must feel natural and personally relevant to the patient," said co-presenter Alexandra Drane, President and co-founder of Eliza Corporation. "When the outreach is done well - based on an individual's needs, realities, and even moods - people will actually share information about their physical and emotional health. This helps us gain valuable insight which we can use to enable healthier behavior. For example, many patients stop taking their medication without telling their doctor. The thoughtful way we approach this kind of information - and address patients' responses in real-time - has led to increased adherence, in addition to the many other validated health outcomes our clients share with us."
"Research on health behavior change is expanding beyond health policy circles as employers, pharmaceutical companies, disease management organizations, health plans and providers face increasing pressure to deliver quality healthcare," said Vernon Schabert, Ph.D and senior director, Health Economics and Outcomes Research at IMS and conference co-presenter with Eliza. "Theory on health behavior change has yet to translate into an abundance of applied successes, and Eliza's approach, which combines theory and practice, is helping to address healthcare challenges through engaging, personally relevant health outreach."
The real-world outcomes shared during the presentation are based on client-reported data from programs Eliza has developed for health plans, pharmaceutical companies, PBMs, and large employers.
