Survival Guide for Allergy Sufferers

Posted on: Thursday, 29 May 2008, 15:00 CDT

For people with seasonal nasal allergies, or hay fever, warm weather means more pollen and bothersome allergy symptoms. And a very early and wet spring this year has caused trees to produce unprecedented amounts of pollen -- the yellow powder floating through the air, coating car windshields, clogging rain gutters and causing misery to allergy sufferers.

FACT: More than 50 million Americans suffer from seasonal allergies, experiencing nasal congestion, runny and itchy nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes.

FACT: Allergy is the 5th leading chronic disease in the U.S. among all ages, and the 3rd most common chronic disease among children under 18 years old.

FACT: Approximately 14.1 million physician office visits each year are attributed to allergic rhinitis.

FACT: Allergies costs the economy nearly $7 billion in medical expenses and lost productivity each year.

But there is relief out there for those who suffer from nasal symptoms related to allergies. The FDA has approved a new nasal spray, Patanase(R), for the relief of the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis in patients 12 years of age and older. It is the first nasal spray approved by the FDA to relieve seasonal nasal allergy symptoms within 30 minutes.

In addition to new treatment options like Patanase(R), Angel Waldron, health advocate for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and Dr. Eli Meltzer, co-director of Allergy & Asthma Medical Group and Research Center, share tips on reducing allergy symptoms.
