$4.1 Million for Mental Health; Four Foundations Fund Coordination of Services in State

Posted on: Monday, 4 April 2005, 09:00 CDT

Four Colorado foundations have agreed to contribute $4.1 million to fund coordination of mental health services in the state.

The foundations - the Caring for Colorado Foundation, the Colorado Trust, the Denver Foundation and HealthOne Alliance - will select five to eight communities where the money will be distributed over five years.

"We have done some research to find out what the needs are in Colorado," said Rebecca Arno, spokeswoman for the Denver Foundation.

"The foundations decided that a joint funding will make the most difference in helping provide mental health services to people in need."

The joint initiative, called Advancing Colorado's Mental Health Care Project, is based on a 2003 study of Colorado's mental health system.

The study found that under the current system, when a person with a behavioral or mental health illness receives care, services may come from many different disconnected sources - human services, criminal justice, school systems, hospital emergency rooms, primary care doctors, private professionals or community mental health services - and can result in poor outcomes.

The new project will provide funding for programs that coordinate these efforts.

A request for proposals is available at the Denver Foundation Web site, www.denverfoundation.org.

The deadline for submitting proposals is May 31.
