May 30–IOWA CITY — Dr. Paul Rothman has been named the new dean of the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, officials announced today.
The appointment will be effective June 1, subject to approval by the state Board of Regents at its June meeting. Rothman succeeds Dr. Jean Robillard, who is stepping down as medical dean to focus on serving as the UI vice president for medical affairs.
Rothman has served as head and professor of internal medicine at the UI medical college and at University Hospitals since 2004. Rothman has served on or provided leadership for numerous college, university and professional committees. An expert in rheumatology, he has provided clinical care for more than 20 years, trained medical students, fellows and residents, and published extensively.
“Dr. Rothman has done an outstanding job as head of internal medicine. He is committed to working with the rest of the senior leadership of University of Iowa Health Care as we integrate the Carver College of Medicine, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and University of Iowa Physicians,” Robillard said.
Rothman joined the UI from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, where he was the Richard J. Stock Professor of Medicine (Immunology) and Microbiology and chief of the pulmonary, allergy and critical care medicine division.
Rothman earned his medical degree at the Yale University School of Medicine in 1984. After completing his medical residency in 1986 at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, he served on the faculty at Columbia, becoming chief of the pulmonary, allergy and critical care medicine division in 1997.
