Evacuation exercise scheduled Wednesday
A hurricane evacuation exercise will be held Wednesday to test lane reversal plans, said Sid Gaulden, spokesman for the S.C. Dept. of Public Safety.
The exercise will last from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Hurricane season began Sunday and ends Nov. 30.
Law enforcement personnel and traffic control devices will be deployed on Interstate 26, U.S. 501 and U.S. 278 as if the roads were reversed for a hurricane evacuation.
The U.S. 501 exercise will begin near Conway at S.C. 22 and end at S.C. 576 and Marion Bypass. Lanes will not be reversed as part of the exercise, Gaulden said.
The exercise should not interfere with the flow of traffic and intersections will not be blocked, Gaulden said.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is asking drivers traveling I-26, U.S. 501 and U.S. 278 to use caution because officers and Department of Transportation employees will be on the shoulders of the highways and at exits, Gaulden said.
