Natural Solutions Names 45 Must-Have Foods for Healthy Weight Loss

Posted on: Tuesday, 3 June 2008, 09:01 CDT

BOULDER, Colo., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- To shed unwanted pounds Americans, spend $46 billion annually on diet products and books. However, many doctors and dietitians say merely choosing the right nutrient-dense foods can help us lose weight, look younger, decrease inflammation in our bodies, and feel more energetic. But most of us don't know how to prepare the healthy ingredients we're encouraged to buy. The article, "The Well-Stocked Kitchen," in Natural Solutions' June issue, offers a list of 45 foods everyone should keep on hand, as well as recipes that incorporate those foods into easy-to-prepare meals and snacks.

"We read all the time about what to eat, what not to eat, and what to stock in our kitchens that will make us healthier and slimmer," says Linda Sparrowe, editor-in-chief. "But how many of us have taken that advice to heart -- thrown out all the food that's bad for us and replaced it with all the good food -- only to wonder what we're supposed to do with it? Our healthy kitchen article demystifies the process by telling the reader what healthy staples to stock up on and what to do with them once she gets them home."

The article divides the foods into three categories -- freezer, refrigerator, and pantry -- and offers several "must-haves" for each:

-- Freezer: Stock up on salmon, black cod, ground bison, ground turkey, frozen organic berries and vegetables, edamame, flaxseeds, and whole-grain breads and waffles. -- Refrigerator: Keep on hand pomegranate juice, organic salad greens, nut butters, avocados, omega-3 eggs, pre-cut veggies, hummus, lemons, limes, and salsa. -- Pantry: Load up on canned beans, short-grain instant brown rice, organic canned tomatoes, steel-cut oats, quinoa, amaranth, unsalted nuts, and extra-virgin olive oil.

Simple, approachable recipes include whole-grain waffles with berry compote, amaranth stir-fry, brown rice-veggie risotto, and a pomegranate-berry smoothie.
